WHAT IS THE STORY READER APP?
A major challenge faced by children who are blind in India is the lack of reading material. Even if the child has learnt Braille, it is primarily used only to read text books in school. The resource constraints in such schools preclude the availability of books of a diverse nature: stories, history, mythology etc. This shortage is particularly acute in the mother tongue of the children. Thus access to reading material is a critical need for such children and the second App that we are building will achieve as the side effect of enjoying stories, the acquisition of competence in touch-screen phone usage.
HOW DOES STORY READER WORK?
This will be reader application meant for the child to navigate among stories and within stories read word by word or line line by line and flip pages and chapters and actively read: of course the text to speech app is actually verbalizing the content. In the process the child will learn about the details of smartphone navigation including searching at various granularity, notion of multiple documents (stories), hierarchical organization and so on, all of them as side effects to the pleasurable activity of reading stories.
